College Roundup : UC Irvine Tied for First Place in PCAA Tennis

Mark Kaplan, UC Irvine’s No. 1 singles player, beat Par Sandqvist of New Mexico State, 6-3, 6-1, to lead the Anteaters to a two-way tie for first in the quarterfinals of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s tennis championships at Las Vegas.

Kaplan, the tournament’s second-seeded player, also teamed with Trevor Kronemann to defeat Mark Johnson and Steve Joyner of Cal State Fullerton, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, in doubles.

The Anteaters (6-1, 24-10) won their six singles and three doubles matches and are tied with Cal State Long Beach with 27 points. Nevada Las Vegas (23 points) is third, and Fresno State (21) is fourth. Cal State Fullerton is tied with San Jose State for eighth (9).

In the PCAA women’s tennis championships at San Jose State, Stephanie Rhorer of UCI upset fourth-seeded Havaja Frljuckic of Long Beach, 6-3, 7-6, to lead the Anteaters to a three-way tie for second place in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, top-seeded Dina Trenwith and Haruko Shigekawa of Irvine defeated Julie Fraser and Rene Tatham of Fresno State, 7-6, 6-2.

San Diego State leads the tournament with 27 points. UC Irvine, University of the Pacific and UC Santa Barbara are tied for second with 25 points.

Both tournaments continue with semifinals today at 10 a.m.
