One man died after apparently suffering a heart attack while running in the 11th Lilac Bloomsday Run at Spokane, Wash., and another man was in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest during the race.

Officials said an unidentified 37-year-old man collapsed shortly after completing the 12-kilometer race. Paramedics treated him at the scene but were unable to revive him.

A 35-year-old man, whose name also was not released, was admitted to Deaconess Medical Center.

Paramedics had difficulty reaching both victims because many runners in the huge field of 53,500 runners began to reach the finish line at about the same time.

Many runners had to be treated for high temperatures because they apparently dressed too warmly. Temperatures were in the low 40s as the race started but were in the 60s by the end of the race when several runners were still wearing jackets and sweat shirts.
