Sonics’ Williams Reacts Angrily to Questions

Seattle SuperSonic guard Kevin Williams shoved a television camerawoman while teammate Dale Ellis responded amicably to media questions Monday in the wake of their arrests after an incident at a Houston night club.

Williams was charged with resisting arrest after an altercation early Sunday morning at the Ocean Club, and Ellis was charged with hindering arrest. Both are misdemeanors.

The two players are scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Reporters were told Monday before entering The Summit at the end of the SuperSonics’ closed practice that the team would not answer questions about the incident.

Williams refused to talk and told another television camera crew to get out of his way.

Ellis and other players declined to discuss the incident on the instructions of team management.

“I’d like to tell you all just what happened, but at this time I’ve been advised not to do so,” said Ellis, a starting guard and the team’s leading scorer.

Scott Shelton, manager of the Ocean Club, said Williams punched him and then struggled with two off-duty uniformed police officers who tried to take the basketball player into custody.

The club manager said that, after a waitress complained, he asked Williams early Sunday morning to move out of an area that allows waitresses access to the bar.

Williams and Ellis were arrested about 12:45 a.m. Sunday by the two off-duty officers and spent a few hours in jail before being released on $500 bond each.
