The New York Mets’ schedule for Dwight Gooden’s return to the major leagues after undergoing drug rehabilitation was altered because Commissioner Peter Ueberroth stipulated that Gooden not be activated before June 1, according to Newsday and the New York Daily News.
Those newspapers reported that the Mets planned to have Gooden return to the team during a West Coast trip starting next Monday in San Francisco.
But the newspapers, quoting unidentified sources, said the timetable for Gooden’s return was changed because Ueberroth believed that Gooden’s drug rehabilitation needed more time.
Gooden reportedly will make his return to the majors June 5 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Shea Stadium.
