Tar Heel Star Charged With Murder; Drugs Suspected
Tailback Derrick Fenner of the University of North Carolina, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher last season, was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday in Upper Marlboro, Md., in a shooting that authorities said happened during a drug sale “turf war.”
Fenner was ordered held without bond after turning himself in. Police had talked with him Saturday, then a first-degree murder warrant was issued for him Monday in connection with the death of Marsellus Leach, 19, at a Hyattsville, Md., apartment complex May 23. Three other suspects are being sought.
Fenner, 20, a sophomore with a history of academic problems, was in Chapel Hill, N.C., attending summer classes.
