Plane Evacuated After Man Jokes About Bomb
DETROIT — A Northwest Airlines DC-9 arriving from Chicago was evacuated Saturday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport when a passenger “half-jokingly” told a flight attendant he could not store a bag in an overhead bin because he had a bomb in it, authorities said.
The 39 passengers were evacuated, and the aircraft was taken to a hangar and searched, but no bomb was found, Sgt. Thomas Schmidtke of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department said.
The man, identified only as a Maywood, Ill., resident, was questioned and released. He could still be charged by the FBI or fined by the Federal Aviation Administration, Schmidtke said.
