Crowds were sparse, but sponsors expressed satisfaction with the first of what they said would be an annual parade honoring the founding of Israel and the reunification of Jerusalem. Led by Mayor Tom Bradley, California Secretary of State March Fong Eu, state Controller Gray Davis and Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block, marchers, including two bagpipe bands, a Mexican charro, a crowded stagecoach and several floats, moved briskly along a two-mile route down Pico Boulevard between Century City and the Fairfax District. Organized by the Israeli Consulate, the Wiesenthal Center and Los Angeles Yeshiva University, the event drew at least one counterdemonstration: Seven people, protesting city officials’ support for the parade and Israel’s control of Jerusalem.
