A brush fire about 15 miles north of Palm Springs was burning toward and was within a half mile of 38 homes in the Snow Creek area and firefighters from the Riverside County Fire Department and California Department of Forestry were preparing to make a house-by-house stand. The fire, buffeted by winds gusting up to 40 m.p.h., had consumed more than 200 acres.
