Four American businessmen told a House subcommittee that they were beaten, tortured and falsely imprisoned in Saudi Arabia while the U.S. Embassy and State Department did little to help them. Two American women also told the congressmen that their estranged Saudi husbands beat them and kidnaped their children and that their appeals to regain custody were denied by Saudi courts. California Rep. Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo), chairman of the Foreign Affairs subcommittee, charged that Saudi Arabia has created a “chamber of horrors” for many visiting Americans.
