Man Shot After Chase by Police Is Identified
Santa Ana police on Tuesday identified Adolfo Navarro Lopez, 21, of La Habra as the man shot to death by an officer after fleeing what authorities said was an attempted murder.
Lopez, who was unarmed, was killed Monday morning after a high-speed chase that began at the scene of a suspected rape and knife attack. The pursuit ended in Garden Grove with a patrol car being rammed head-on. Lopez jumped from the getaway car and charged an officer, ignoring commands in English and Spanish to stop, police said. He was shot once in the stomach by the officer and died later during surgery at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.
Three men with Lopez were booked into Orange County Jail on Monday on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police said the chase began after an officer interrupted an attack by the men on a woman early Monday in the parking lot of a Santa Ana shopping center at McFadden Avenue and Harbor Boulevard. The woman, who suffered multiple stab wounds, was listed in fair condition Tuesday at the Fountain Valley hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
