Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who Tuesday was re-signed to a new two-year contract by the Lakers, will remain with the team as a coach-consultant for five years after his scheduled retirement in 1989.
According to a Los Angeles public relations firm, the dollar figure on the new contract exceeds that of any player in U.S. team sports history. Sport magazine recently reported the highest paid athlete to be Boston Red Sox outfielder Jim Rice, who earns an estimated $2,412,500 a year.
