David Lynch’s film “Blue Velvet” will continue to be shown in South Africa despite the objections of the apartheid government’s home affairs minister, a board of government censors ruled Monday. The controversial film has drawn protests from some South African filmgoers who see it as a threat to South Africa’s strict moral standards, and Home Affairs Minister Stoffel Botha had asked the Publications Appeal Board to consider ordering substantial cuts or banning the movie altogether. But the board of censors decided that the film was not pornographic and that the adult, reasonable viewer would not find it undesirable--although “Blue Velvet” has been banned from video distribution or screening at drive-in cinemas.
