Los Angeles City Councilwoman-elect Ruth Galanter took the oath of office Friday at UCLA Medical Center with a small gathering of friends and family looking on. Galanter, who is expected to be released from the hospital today after treatment for injuries from a stabbing attack in May, will succeed Councilwoman Pat Russell. Since Russell’s term does not end until 12:01 a.m. July 1, City Clerk Elias Martinez said, Galanter cannot officially take office until then. Galanter said she still plans to attend a City Hall swearing-in Wednesday. Martinez said it is “not unusual” for council members to want to have a small ceremony before the one held in City Hall.
