WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Summer’s here, and the time is right for sitting on the aisle: It was a strong refrain last weekend for the nation’s movie theaters, with the previous weekend’s one-two punch holding the same spots this past frame. Universal’s “Dragnet” took the top spot again, with $7 million in ticket sales at 1,343 theaters ($23.5 million total to date), while Mel Brooks’ “Spaceballs,” via MGM, landed $4.8 million at 1,389 screens. “Innerspace,” the highly touted Steven Spielberg production for Warner Bros., opened surprisingly softly over the Fourth of July weekend, doing $4.7 million in 1,603 theaters. The weekend’s other major new release, Disney/Touchstone’s “Adventures in Babysitting,” also was disappointing: $2.9 million at 1,126 sites. Four hardy holdovers--”Beverly Hills Cop II,” “The Untouchables,” “Witches of Eastwick” and “Predator”--all topped $4 million in ticket business over the weekend, while “Roxanne” (at $3,170 per screen after three weeks) and (especially) “Full Metal Jacket” (a big $9,250 per venue) did well in narrower release patterns.
