A race jury stripped Bengal of Japan...
A race jury stripped Bengal of Japan of the world 12-meter yachting championship at Porto Cervo, Sardinia, and awarded the title to New Zealand, ruling Japan had forced New Zealand off course in Friday’s decisive race.
It marked the second time in two days the race jury had reversed the result of a race. On Thursday, Bengal stayed alive in the best-of-three competition when the jury ruled that New Zealand obstructed the Japanese boat with a tack at the start of the second race.
The jury met for more than three hours to determine the blame for a tacking incident near the end of Friday’s final regatta. The crew of the New Zealand boat, KZ7, claimed Bengal forced their boat off its line going into the last mark.
