SANTIAGO, Chile — A Swedish astronomer disappeared during a rainstorm in the foothills of the Andes in northern Chile, a Swedish Embassy officer said last week.
Astronomer Aarne Ardiber, who worked at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla, was on a field trip looking for a new site for an observatory.
His Jeep was swamped by mud on a dirt road during heavy rainfall early Tuesday morning 750 miles north of Santiago. His driver set off on foot for help, but when a rescue party reached the Jeep, Ardiber had disappeared, police said.
