New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner has made a proposal that would place umpire crews from the National and American leagues under one supervisor.
Currently, umpires work under the direction of their respective league president and an umpire supervisor.
Steinbrenner has been upset over numerous incidents between the Yankees and umpires, the most recent coming Saturday when Ken Kaiser ejected Charles Hudson for throwing behind the Detroit Tigers’ Mike Heath after two Detroit home runs.
“What is needed is the same thing the other professional sports have,” Steinbrenner said. “The NFL and the NBA have their officials under one head, and standard rules for all.”
