Veteran TV newsman David Brinkley, threatened with $2,137 in possible fines for owing 10 cents in back taxes, regards the situation wryly. Brinkley said Sunday on his ABC television program, “This Week With David Brinkley,” that he recently received a “brisk and officious” note from District of Columbia tax officials informing him he owes 10 cents in back property taxes. “A $2,000 fine for claimed back taxes of 10 cents?” a disbelieving Brinkley asked at the close of the show. “That concludes today’s lesson in democracy.” The district’s deputy director of intergovernmental relations said he assumes the bill was an error.
