Shoemaker Rides Carload to Victory at Del Mar
DEL MAR — Carload, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, came from behind to win by 1 lengths Monday in the $30,000 feature race for 3-year-olds and up at Del Mar.
Our Lordship, with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard, finished second, 1 lengths in front of High Hook, ridden by Gary Stevens.
Carload, fourth for most of the race, covered 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast track in 1:15 3-5 and earned $16,500 for the victory.
Fighting off pacesetter Our Lordship in the stretch, Carload paid $9.20, $3.60 and $3.40. Our Lordship returned $2.80 and $2.60, and High Hook paid $3.20.
Carrying 117 pounds, Carload forged for the lead coming to the sixteenth marker, edging past Our Lordship in the stretch.
Our Lordship, carrying 116 pounds, led from the start until Carload passed him. High Hook, carrying 115 pounds, came five-wide in the stretch, rallying from seventh place.
