Driver Arrested After Crash Kills Passenger
A 24-year-old woman was killed early Sunday when the car in which she was a passenger crossed the center line on a Canoga Park street and crashed into two other vehicles.
Carla Crawford, 24, of Canoga Park was pronounced dead at Humana Hospital in West Hills shortly after the accident, police said.
The car’s driver--Stewart Dewberry, 25, also of Canoga Park--was arrested on suspicion of felony manslaughter, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Jim Gicking. Investigators said Dewberry had been drinking.
Dewberry was driving east on Sherman Way near Medical Center Drive about 12:30 a.m. when he lost control of his 1962 Volkswagen, police said. His car crossed the center line and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by David Frank Bowman, 36, of Calabasas, then overturned and slid into a second car driven by Alfred Orum Jr., 36, of Canoga Park.
Bowman was treated at the scene for minor injuries, Gicking said. Orum was not injured. Dewberry, who suffered a fractured neck, was listed in serious but stable condition Sunday afternoon in the jail ward of Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.
