Stephen Roche of Ireland strengthened his status as the world’s No. 1 cyclist by winning the World Professional Road Championship at Villach, Austria, to become the second rider in history to win cycling’s grand slam.
Roche, who also won the Tour de France and Tour of Italy, outsprinted defending champion Moreno Argentin of Italy and Martin Juan Fernandez of Spain.
The only other rider to win the grand slam was Eddy Merckx of Belgium in 1974.
