Amnesty International reported that police torture is widespread in China despite government efforts to crack down on its use. The London-based human rights organization said suspects have been beaten, whipped, hung up by the arms and assaulted with cattle prods in police stations and detention centers to extract confessions. “Authorities have given priority to . . . trying to get torture cases investigated,” the organization said in a report. “But Chinese law does not include enough safeguards against violation of detainees’ human rights.”
