Man Leaps Off Bridge During Labor Day Walk
ST. IGNACE, Mich. — A 40-year-old man accompanying his wife during the annual Labor Day walk across the Mackinac Bridge jumped to his death in what appeared to be suicide, officials said today.
Ronald R. Courier of Bay City took off his coat and fell 170 feet into Lake Huron from the east side of the bridge. Divers recovered the body today. Courier and his wife were among an estimated 50,000 participants in the annual five-mile walk across the bridge, which connects Michigan’s two peninsulas. Authorities said they did not know why Courier jumped.
