A judge has overturned a jury verdict awarding $214,500 in damages and $27,717 in legal fees to a 42-year-old former Solana Beach hair stylist who alleged that he was beaten by two San Diego County sheriff’s deputies in an altercation that began over a noise complaint.
Municipal Judge Harold F. Wolters ordered a new trial of James Woodward’s suit against the Sheriff’s Department and deputies Paul Roberts and Robert Takeshta. A jury in June found in Woodward’s favor in the incident at the Shear Madness Haircutting salon on North Highway 101 in Solana Beach on Nov. 6, 1981.
