A spokesman for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the world’s largest private distributor of AIDS literature, said California is impeding AIDS education efforts by refusing to use state funds for distribution of graphically explicit materials. Nearly two years ago, the state Office of AIDS banned AIDS organizations from using state funds to distribute several already released prevention pamphlets that officials say border on “pornography.” Dr. Tim Wolfred, the foundation’s executive director, said many gay and bisexual men, prisoners, illiterate people and minority teen-agers “have got to have (literature) that connects with their life styles,” both linguistically and culturally.
