Lawndale : Suit Over Center Project

A community group has filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court to force the City Council to conduct an environmental impact report on the civic center expansion project.

Friends of Lawndale, a loosely organized group of residents near the civic center on Burin Avenue south of Rosecrans Avenue, argue that the project will create traffic and parking problems.

A. D. (Jack) Allen, the group’s attorney, said the group does not want to block the project but wants its concerns addressed.

Mayor Sarann Kruse said she feels “very comfortable with the city’s action up to this point.”

In July, the council said an environmental impact report was not needed because the project, which will double the size of the facility, would have little effect on the surrounding area. Assistant City Manager Paula Cone said a contractor is expected to be selected later this month and construction is to begin in November. Completion should take about 18 months, she said.
