Inglewood Educator Ernest Shaw Dies

Ernest Shaw, vice president of the Inglewood school board, died of a heart attack at his home on Monday. He was 60.

Shaw was elected to the Inglewood Unified School District board in 1985 and served as president and twice as vice president. He had a long career as a teacher, math resource specialist and assistant principal with the Los Angeles schools. He was on a one-year sabbatical from the Los Angeles school system at the time of his death.

Shaw was born in Wichita, Kan., in 1927. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Pepperdine University in 1956, a master’s degree from the University of Southern California in 1964, and a Ph.D in education from California Western University in 1978. His numerous community activities included service on the Nickerson Gardens Residents Advisory Council, from which he recently received an Outstanding Service Award.

Shaw is survived by his wife, Lorene, and six children. Services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ, 7911 Vermont Ave., Los Angeles.

Inglewood school board members will meet with lawyers for the district and the County Education Department to determine whether Shaw’s seat will be filled by appointment or a special election, a district spokeswoman said.
