COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Southland Roundup : Santa Barbara Makes Wright Move in Win
Paul Wright threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Sean Russell with 1:05 remaining to give UC Santa Barbara a 17-13 win over Claremont-Mudd Saturday in a nonconference game at Claremont.
It was the Russell’s second touchdown of the game. The first came in the third quarter on a 66-yard pass from Wright that gave Santa Barbara (2-0) a 10-0 lead entering the fourth quarter. But Claremont-Mudd (0-1) scored two touchdowns in a five-minute span in the fourth quarter to take a 13-10 lead with 4:25 remaining.
Wright finished with 23 completions in 42 attempts for 323 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Russell had 8 receptions for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Pomona-Pitzer 31, Colorado College 10--Ed Irick threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Sagehens to a nonconference win over the Tigers in the season opener for both teams at Pomona.
Irick completed 16 of 22 passes for 307 yards, including touchdown passes of 67 and 30 yards. Dan Daley had 7 receptions for 158 yards and 1 touchdown.
Occidental 19, La Verne 14--Mike Sandlin ran for 182 yards in 33 carries, including touchdown runs of 15 and 20 yards to lead the Tigers over the Leopards in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Occidental.
La Verne (0-1) was led by quarterback Mark Brown, who threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Occidental is 1-0-1 overall.
Whittier 15, Azusa Pacific 12--Senior quarterback Ramon Juarez ran four yards for a touchdown with 2:06 remaining to give the Poets the win in a nonconference game at Azusa Pacific.
CS Northridge 45, San Francisco State 0--Freshman Albert Fann ran for 127 yards in 12 carries, including touchdown runs of 2 and 97 yards, and quarterback Rob Huffman threw three touchdown passes to lead the Matadors in a nonconference game at Northridge.
Cal Poly SLO 51, Cal Lutheran 23--The Mustangs had 308 yards rushing and held the Kingsmen to minus 29 yards rushing in a nonconference win at Thousand Oaks.
U. San Diego 28, Redlands 0--Freshman quarterback Brendan Murphy passed for two touchdowns, and Braulio Castillo and Todd Jackson each ran for scores as the Toreros won a nonconference game at Redlands.
