After opening North America’s only indoor speed skating rink and a new Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary, President Juan Antonio Samaranch of the International Olympic Committee approved preparations for the 1988 Winter Olympics Feb. 13-28.

“We are not seeing any problems--only the weather,” Samaranch said after meeting the board of directors of Calgary’s Olympic organizing committee.

Mild chinook winds in mid-winter frequently bring shirt-sleeve weather to this city of 640,000 at the edge of the Rocky Mountains.

But Marc Hodler, president of the International Ski Federation, said the warm blasts from the Pacific should not disrupt the Games if enough snow is stockpiled beforehand.
