Military coup leaders today freed deposed Prime Minister Timoci Bavadra, who said the army and two rival political parties would meet to try to end more than four months of ethnic and political turmoil.

Bavadra said the agreement to meet Monday put on hold plans by coup leader Col. Sitiveni Rabuka to form a Fijian republic. Bavadra’s announcement came after a meeting with Rabuka, Governor-General Ratu Sir Ganilau and Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, leader of the Alliance Party.
