In a move to combat pollution and encourage tourism, municipal authorities will close Mexico City’s historical center to private vehicles on Saturdays.

The Federal District Department, which has long barred traffic from the city’s historical area on Sundays, said that the district also will be closed to traffic on Saturdays, starting this weekend. The center will be reserved for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Some of Mexico City’s best examples of colonial architecture, including the National Palace and the Aztec Templo Mayor, are in the historical district.

Public transport to the district will not be affected, authorities said.
