The pro-dance fans of Anson, Tex., called their town’s first dance in 54 years a big success. “We never expected this many people to come. It’s fantastic,” Mercy Torres, president of a group called Footloose, said of the sellout affair. The original ban was enacted in 1933 because the town’s heavily fundamentalist Christian population believed dancing was sinful. This spring the City Council changed the law, but stipulated a midnight curfew and a ban on alcohol.
