Calif. Zephyr Derails in Iowa
RUSSELL, Iowa — Amtrak’s eastbound California Zephyr passenger train hit a railroad crane car today and derailed, injuring more than 110 of the passengers and crew members on board.
Ambulances were dispatched to the scene and took the injured people to area hospitals. Two were flown by medical helicopter to Des Moines. The train operates between Chicago and San Francisco, combining eastbound at Salt Lake City with trains from Los Angeles and Seattle. An Amtrak spokeswoman said the 16-car train was headed for Chicago when it hit a bridge derrick in south central Iowa about 11:30 a.m.
