ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Sunset League : Edison Ends Losing Streak on Late Surge

Coach Dave White can stop worrying about his Edison High School football team running up the white flag. Trainer Jamie Wise can shave off his scraggly protest beard. And the Chargers now know they can produce in the second half.

When Edison beat Marina, 21-0, Thursday night at LeBard Stadium in a Sunset League opener and homecoming game, the Chargers scored all their points in the second half. The victory ended a five-game losing streak. In three of those defeats, Edison had a first-half lead.

“We had a chance to prove to people we’re a good second-half team, we’re not quitters,” White said. “If we would have lost this one, we might have gone into the tank.”

That plunge was delayed indefinitely when quarterback Greg Angelovic completed a pass for 23 yards to tight end Brian Ryder in the third quarter. Angelovic followed that act with touchdown passes of four yards to Chip Hanlon later in the same period and nine yards to Hanlon in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, running back Gus Miranda paced the Edison offense with 94 yards in 17 carries, including a 24-yard run that set up the second touchdown.

Edison’s defense was just as adept. The Chargers (1-5 overall, 1-0 in league play) limited Marina (1-5, 0-1) to 116 yards. Marina quarterback David Schultz was fleeing defensive linemen all night when they weren’t busy holding running back Stacy Kagasoff to 32 yards in 15 carries.

Scott Jarrett and James Petersen each made an interception to shut down Marina drives. Wayne DuPlantis blocked a punt that set up the Chargers’ final score.
