Tahiti on Alert for More Riots
Associated Press
PAPEETE, Tahiti — Hundreds of police and soldiers patrolled this French Pacific territory today to prevent another outburst of riots, looting and arson that prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency.
About 200 Foreign Legionnaires in green berets were on duty at several points, including the port, where the violence began Friday night with a confrontation between striking dockworkers and police. Police guarded the center of the city, which was scarred by pillage and burning. At least two dozen people were reported injured.
