Italian train workers called a 24-hour wildcat strike, causing delays and cancellations of more than half of the scheduled departures, railway officials said. Officials for Alitalia airlines, meanwhile, announced the cancellation of 56 national and international flights today through Saturday because of strikes by maintenance technicians. At Rome’s main rail station, only six of 86 scheduled trains operated after the walkout began, stranding hundreds of travelers. Government ministers are to meet today in a special session to discuss the public service strikes.
