Local News in Brief : Sheriff Calls In the FBI
Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block has asked the FBI to join an investigation into the escape of a reputed Colombian drug kingpin from the county’s Central Jail.
FBI agents were asked to assist in an inquiry into the disappearance of William Alonso Londono, 23, because of the likelihood of official corruption, a violation of federal law, Block said.
Within a week of Londono’s disappearance Aug. 25, Block told reporters, “What appears to be obvious is that there was some complicity by someone in this facility.”
Although Londono was being held in a maximum-security cellblock, his disappearance went unnoticed by jail authorities for six days, giving him ample time to flee the United States, officials said.
