Local News in Brief : Belushi Case May Reopen
The Los Angeles city attorney’s office has appealed the recent dismissal of misdemeanor assault and battery charges against actor Jim Belushi, who allegedly attacked a pedestrian in Westwood in January.
Los Angeles Municipal Judge Sherman Smith dismissed the case on Oct. 7 after the victim said that Belushi, 34, had financially compensated him for his injuries. Under California law, a judge has the authority to drop misdemeanor charges if the victim testifies that he has been compensated to his satisfaction.
City Atty. James Hahn said he decided to appeal the dismissal to the Los Angeles Municipal Court because “public interest demands prosecution of violent crime.”
