Halloween Spirits May Get Dampened

San Diego’s Halloween trick-or-treaters may get soaked tonight as a storm moves into the area early today, according to forecasters.

“We’re expecting fairly steady showers throughout Saturday, to dump about a half-inch to an inch of rain in the coastal and inland areas,” National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said.

On Sunday, a 30% chance of showers is expected in the morning. The afternoon may see sunny skies with a few clouds and cool temperatures, according to Shigehara.

“Because of high-level winds, San Diego is receiving moisture from dissipated Tropical Storm Selma--which is off the coast of Baja--a lot quicker than we expected,” Shigehara said. This moisture is getting caught up with the low-pressure system hovering over San Diego, according to Shigehara.

‘Vulnerable to Storms’

“San Diego is particularly vulnerable to storms right now because of the presence of this low-pressure system,” Shigehara said.

“We expect this low pressure to hang around until Wednesday.”

Forecasters expect more than an inch of rain in the fire-devastated Palomar Mountain area. The County Office of Disaster Preparedness will remain on standby throughout the weekend in case of mud slides or flooding, according to Public Information Officer Willard Lewis.

“Our main concern is with Palomar. Right now we’re at the mercy of the rain,” Lewis said.

San Diego’s wet weather pattern will continue early next week, as another storm is expected to hit Tuesday.

“We’re expecting next week’s storm on Tuesday, though it could also come a day early. Rain from that storm should continue until mid-week,” Shigehara said. Coastal highs for the weekend will be from 65 to 69 degrees, with lows from 60 to 63 degrees through Sunday, according to WeatherData, which provides forecasts for The Times.

Surf will remain from two to four feet. Ocean temperatures are around 66 degrees.

Inland valley highs will range from 65 to 71 degrees, with lows in the 58- to 62-degree range both days.

Mountain highs will be from 55 to 65 degrees, with lows dropping to the 42- to 50-degree range. Desert area highs will climb to 75 to 81 degrees through Sunday, with lows from 65 to 70 degrees.
