Soviet Couple Will Join Daughter Who Defected in 1982
MOSCOW — A Soviet couple who have sought to join their daughter in the United States, where she defected in 1982, reports that they are being allowed to emigrate.
Galina Gerasimov told reporters that she and her husband, Andrei Zhdanov, have been informed by Moscow authorities of the decision.
The couple’s daughter, Vassa, defected in the United States while taking part in a swimming competition.
“It is difficult to say when we will leave,” Gerasimov said late Thursday. “We expect we will go to either Bucharest or Vienna, and from there to the United States.”
