Contras Reportedly Release American
MIAMI — American religious worker Paul A. Fisher, 41, taken captive by U.S.-backed Contras on Oct. 17, was released in good health Friday in Nicaragua, a spokeswoman for the rebels said.
Fisher, a worker for Witness for Peace, was released in the town of El Negro, in Zelaya province, to a priest and an American reporter, said Marta Sacasa, a spokeswoman for the Nicaraguan Resistance.
There was no confirmation of Fisher’s release from sources in Central America.
“I was called from rebel forces,” Sacasa said. “That’s the information they gave, but due to the communications, I’m sure that no details will be coming until tomorrow.”
As a member of Witness for Peace, Fisher, of Mill Valley, Calif., was captured while investigating alleged atrocities by the Contras.
