Make Room for Murray in the Hall of Fame
On Oct. 23, Jim Murray wrote that Babe Ruth hit .625 in the 1925 World Series, the highest average in Series history. The problem is, the 1925 Series was between the Washington Senators and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Babe Ruth and the Yankees finished far off the pace that year, and Ruth had his worst season as a Yankee, missing much of it with a stomach disorder.
Ruth’s .625 average came in the 1928 Series, a four-game Yankee blowout of the St. Louis Cardinals in which Lou Gehrig also broke the previous record by hitting .545. As Casey Stengel used to say, you could look it up.
