Questioning Santa Ana’s Academic Standards

In light of the article “No Forfeits Required of Santa Ana,” (Oct. 24) one must question the lack of consistent academic standards at Santa Ana High in particular, and for athletes in general.

It is difficult to believe that the two Santa Ana High athletes who were unable to maintain even a C average during the previous semester were able to improve their grades from D’s to A’s during a summer school repeat of the challenging subject of world history. It seems questionable that there is no correlation between their summer school grades and their instructor’s duties as the assistant varsity football coach.

The most important issue here is not the athletic eligibility of the two students. Instead, it is the lack of consistent academic standards at the school, and the question of preferential treatment for athletes. It would appear to be mandatory for the principal at Santa Ana High to conduct a thorough investigation of this matter.
