Liang Shih-chiu, Translator of Shakespeare
Liang Shih-chiu, 86, who devoted 30 years to the translation of all of William Shakespeare’s plays into Chinese. Liang was also known for his studies of classical and contemporary English literature, writing a history of English literature in Chinese and compiling a Chinese-English dictionary. He began translating Shakespeare’s 37 plays in the 1930s and completed his project in 1967. He studied at Harvard and Columbia universities in the early ‘20s and was professor of English literature at Beijing University from 1934 to 1937. He came to Taiwan after the Communists defeated the Nationalists in 1949 and taught at Taiwan’s Normal University from 1949 to 1966. In Taipei on Tuesday.
