FALL HIGHLIGHTS : Marmonte League Teams Advance in Volleyball
The Marmonte League’s top three girls volleyball teams all registered first-round victories in the Southern Section 2-A Division playoffs on Thursday.
League-champion Thousand Oaks (16-1), the No. 1-ranked team, breezed past Morro Bay, 15-4, 15-6, 15-8, at Thousand Oaks.
The defending 2-A champion Lancers were led by senior Shireen Campbell, who had 5 kills, 7 blocks and 4 service aces. Senior outside-hitter Julie Chellevold had a match-high 12 kills.
Other Marmonte League teams to advance were No.2-ranked Royal, a 15-5, 15-11, 15-4 winner at Paso Robles, and Newbury Park, a 15-11, 16-14, 15-7 winner at Arroyo Grande.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Burroughs d. Temple City, 15-9, 15-10, 7-15, 15-11--Debbie Penney had 30 kills and 7 blocks for Burroughs in a first-round Southern Section 3-A Division playoff win at Temple City.
Canyon d. Oak Park, 15-9, 14-16, 15-9, 3-15, 15-7--Lisa Mosier led Canyon with 8 kills in a Southern Section 3-A Division first-round playoff at Canyon.
Cleveland d. North Hollywood, 15-3, 15-9--Cleveland finished its Valley 3-A League schedule with an easy win at home. Nancy Nicholls led Cleveland (13-1, 11-1) with 10 kills.
Big Pine d. Grace Community, 15-8, 15-12, 15-5--Grace Community was eliminated in the first round of the Small Schools Division playoffs.
