NHL Roundup : Pittsburgh’s Winless Streak at Philadelphia Reaches 39
The Philadelphia Flyers continued their home-ice dominance over the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday night as Mark Howe had a goal and an assist to lead the way in a 5-2 victory, extending the Penguins’ winless streak at the Spectrum to 39 games.
Since last winning at Philadelphia on Jan. 20, 1974, Pittsburgh is 0-36-3.
The Flyers, who never trailed in the game,ended a five-game winless streak.
Winnipeg 1, New Jersey 1--Dale Hawerchuk of the Jets scored a power-play goal 40 seconds into the third period for the tie at East Rutherford, N.J. It also ended the Devils’ eight-game home winning streak to open the season.
The NHL record for consecutive wins at home is 11, by Chicago in the 1963-64 season. Only three teams had won at least nine straight.
The tie still left the Devils undefeated at home this season (8-0-1) and raised their record to 10-4-2. Winnipeg is also playing well, having gone 3-0-1 in its last four outings and 5-1-1 in the last seven.
New York Islanders 4, St. Louis 3--Pat LaFontaine and Greg Gilbert each had a goal and an assist at St. Louis to lead the Islanders to their third straight win.
Boston 3, Montreal 2--Keith Cowder’s power-play goal with 8:14 to play in the game at Boston gave the Bruins the win and snapped the Canadiens’ eight-game unbeaten streak.
