The John Douglas French Center for Alzheimer’s Disease, a 148-bed long-term care facility for Alzheimer’s patients, will open Friday at 3957 Katella Ave., Los Alamitos.

The $10-million center is the first of 12 “model-care” centers the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease plans to open across the nation through joint ventures. The centers will incorporate the organization’s medical care program with strict architectural design standards.

The Los Alamitos facility is owned by Los Angeles-based National Medical Enterprises. It will provide adult day-care and respite-care programs in addition to long-term care.

Opera star Dorothy Kirsten French, founding chairman and chief executive of the foundation, received the 1987 Distinguished Service Award of the American Assn. of Homes for the Aging last month.

French established the foundation in 1983, and it has so far raised more than $1 million for Alzheimer’s research. Her husband, former director of the UCLA Brain Research Institute, suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.
