A car went down a 30-foot embankment and overturned near Saugus, killing one youth and injuring two others, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday.

The name of the dead youth was not disclosed pending notification of relatives. He was believed to be about 18 years old, but his address and exact age were not known, a Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman said.

He was a passenger in a 1979 Plymouth Champ involved in the crash at 3:50 p.m. Saturday along San Francisquito Canyon Road north of Seco Canyon Road, CHP Officer Monty Keifer said. The car was traveling southbound “at an excessive speed” when the driver lost control, Keifer said.

The driver, Elian Saado, 17, of Reseda, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, a hospital spokeswoman said. She would not disclose his condition. Keifer said Saado had major injuries.

Another passenger, Michael Cook, 18, of Sherman Oaks, who the CHP said had moderate injuries, was treated at the hospital and “chose to leave,” the spokeswoman said.
