China accused a “small number of U.S. congressmen” of harming Sino-U.S. relations by participating in a Nov. 17 demonstration outside the Chinese Embassy in Washington to protest human rights abuses in Tibet. A statement issued over the weekend by the Chinese government said the congressmen “interfered in China’s internal affairs” by advocating Tibet’s independence from Beijing. China, which annexed Tibet in 1950, maintains that the Himalayan region has been part of its territory for centuries.
