NCAA Soccer : San Diego St. Eliminates UCLA on Wynalda’s Breakaway Goal
Eric Wynalda scored on a breakaway 10 minutes into the second half to lift San Diego State to a 2-1 win over the UCLA Sunday in an NCAA Division I quarterfinal soccer match.
San Diego State’s only victory in 18 previous games against UCLA was 2-1 in overtime in the 1969 Far West Regional championship.
The Aztecs, 19-5, will meet Harvard, 14-0-3, in the semifinals next Saturday at a site to be determined.
Clemson, 16-5, will face North Carolina, 20-4, in the other semifinal match.
UCLA finished the season at 14-7-1.
San Diego State’s Gerardo Jimenez, assisted by Chris Keenan, scored San Diego State’s first goal on a cross at 11:00.
